Recognition of secondary school education equivalence

If you want to enrol in a degree programme at any university in the Czech Republic and your previous education was acquired in another country, it is necessary to have your previous education formally recognized by the Czech authorities. The process of recognizing the equivalence of previous education acquired in another country is known as nostrification. This process is carried out by the regional authorities of the Czech Republic.

Under Czech law, the following are exempt from the requirement for nostrification:

– holders of the European Baccalaureate

– holders of the International Baccalaureate

– holders of foreign certificates of education which are automatically recognized as equivalent under the Czech Republic's international obligations – this mainly applies to documents issued in Slovakia, Poland (świadectwo dojrzałości), Hungary (érettségi bizonyítvány) and Slovenia

In a recent change to Czech law, universities are able to provide an alternative form of recognition of previous education, sometimes known as "internal nostrification". This main difference is that this form of recognition of equivalence only applies to the university, faculty and study programme for which the applicant is applying, unlike the nostrification provided by the regional authories, which is valid throughout the Czech Republic.

Option One:

To apply for nostrification, you should submit an application to the regional authorities of the Czech Republic.

New applications are accepted on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 am.

Please contact Mrs Kostrhůnová by email or make an appointment before visiting!

The charge for the nostrification process is currently 3000 CZK and the official deadline for processing applications is 30 days. However, please note that this deadline can be extended in complicated cases where additional documentation is required, so we strongly recommend allowing extra time for the process.

Option Two:

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is introducing a system of internal recognition of previous education which will offer an alternative to nostrification for applicants to our study programmes. Please note that this form of "internal nostrification" is only valid for the specific study programme to which you are applying – it satisfies the requirement for proof of equivalence within the admissions procedure, but it is not a universal recognition of the equivalence of your previous education.

In order to apply for "internal nostrification", applications will have to download an application form from the university website and pay an administrative fee of 700 CZK. The completed application form should be submitted to the faculty along with proof of payment of this fee and the following documents:

– A foreign certificate of secondary school education (school leaving certificate)

– A document confirming the content and scope of the foreign secondary school education (transcript of subjects studied)

All documents should be submitted in paper form, not electronically, and should be certified copies of the original (i.e. a copy which has been signed and stamped by a recognised authority as a true copy of the original). We do not recommend sending originals unless you have multiple copies as we do not return documents sent to us as part of the admissions procedure.

Documents not originally issued in Czech, English or Slovak must be officially translated into Czech or English by a sworn translator (either Czech or foreign). Translations must be attached to the certified copies of the relevant documents in a way that prevents the translated pages from being exchanged or replaced. Translations attached to uncertified copies of documents will not be accepted.

In some cases, applicants may be asked to provide further documentation, such as:

– Additional information on the content and scope of the foreign secondary school education

– Confirmation from the relevant foreign authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) of the accreditation of the foreign secondary school

– Confirmation from the foreign secondary school or another foreign authority (e.g. Ministry of Education) that graduates of the relevant secondary education programme are eligible to apply for a Bachelor's or undergraduate Master's programme

If the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is satisfied that the applicant has proved the equivalence of their secondary school education, they will issue a positive statement that this requirement has been fulfilled. If the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is not satisfied that the applicant has proved the equivalence of their secondary school education, they will request that the applicant applies for nostrification from the regional authority – see above for details.

Further details will be added to this page once applications for internal nostrification in the 2026 admissions procedure are launched.
